Yes. JStock is legal. To retrieve stock information, it is using method provided and allowed by Yahoo!. Please refer to replied mail from Yahoo! Customer Support. For your information, JStock uses the following way to talk to Yahoo! server - http://download.finance.yahoo.com/d/quotes.csv?s=YHOO&f=sl1d1t1c1ohgv&e=.csv
How can I backup my portfolio in case I want to format my computer?
We are working on this feature (#2833216) right now. Meanwhile, you may use the following workaround. Perform backup on the following folder :
- Windows XP - C:\Documents and Settings\{Your Name}\.jstock\
- Windows Vista - C:\Users\{Your Name}\.jstock\
- Linux - ~/.jstock/
In case you need to restore portfolio, just copy your backup files back to the above mentioned location.
I cannot find XYZ stock.
Go to Database-> Stock Database...-> New, input "XYZ".

Very high chance that you are not having Java 6 installed in your lovely Mac machine. Please refer here, here and here on how to install Java 6 for Mac. We had packaged JStock in dmg file for Mac.
